When my girls were young trick-or-treaters, they always came back home ready for a hot drink to warm them up. This is the hot cocoa I made every time.
Hot Cocoa for Cold Trick-Or-Treaters
For each serving:
1 Tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 Tablespoon granulated sugar
Dash salt
1/4 cup hot water
3/4 cup milk
1. In a small saucepan, mix together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Add hot water, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 2 minutes.
2. Add milk and heat through, but do not boil. Top with whipped cream or mini-marshmallows, if desired. You can also whip the cocoa if your kids like some froth on top. Serves one.
For Adults: If I want some cocoa, too, I sometimes use hot coffee in place of the hot water.
With the coffee version–throw in a cinnamon stick, a bit of dark chocolate, and a dash of cayenne pepper and watch them come running 🙂
Your passion for antique cookbooks is wonderful.
Take care,
Chase
Hi Chase – I am going to try your additions to my next batch of hot cocoa. It sounds great! Thanks for writing and sharing the cookbook passion for the oldies but goodies.
