As I was perusing my cookbooks wondering what which one to write about next, the doorbell rang and the nice FedEx man left me this little piece of heaven. Toscana is one of the most successful Italian restaurants in Los Angeles. Since 1989, Toscana has welcomed Hollywood elite, locals, and tourists alike. After two decades of perfecting their recipes, the owners are now ready to share their culinary secrets behind the most requested and beloved recipes. There are more than 100 recipes written for the home kitchen.
President and co-founder of Toscana, Mike Gordon, developed his passion for food from his father, Bobby Gordon. Mike has kept that passion alive in his family, passing it down to his own son and grandson. This is why, throughout the book, there are many quotes from celebrities and satisfied customers about how dining at Toscana is like going home in a warm and comfortable atmosphere. One couple expressed that “When we go to Toscana, we feel like we’re in a rustic Italian village surrounded by friends.” Henry Winkler and family write, “What we love about Toscana is that it feels like a family tradition – Sunday nights- early dinner. Congratulations for making such a wonderful, caring, and delicious tradition and thank you! See you Sunday at 6:00.” With such glowing remarks about the restaurant, how could I not immediately dive into the book? So I did! However, what to choose?? Every recipe is better than the one before. I narrowed it down to Pounded Chicken with Rosemary, Spaghetti with Tomato and Basil, or the Halibut with Cherry Tomatoes. All very simple, yet authentic and elegant, with bright colors and intoxicating aromas. In the end, my daughter Kara and I felt like having fish, so we went with the halibut along with some sauteed spinach.
Che bello. It was wonderful. The cookbook is now going to be within reach in my kitchen for awhile so I can happily grab it and plan dinners. I am thrilled to have this amazing cookbook in my library. Next time I visit my food writer daughter in Los Angeles, we will head over to Toscana and take in the atmosphere – then she can write about it, too. But for now, I can actually be there in my own kitchen whenever I open the cookbook. Bravissimo!!
