Thomas Jefferson is rumored to have invented the original ice cream made from this native fruit.  This incredible plum ice cream can be made with any color plums of the season.

Old-Fashioned Plum Ice Cream

1-1/2 pounds ripe tart plums
1-3/4 cups sugar
4 egg yolks
1-1/2 cups warm half-and-half (105 to 115 degrees)
1-1/3 cups whipping cream
1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
3 Tablespoons Grand Marnier

1.  Place plums in boiling water for 2 minutes. Peel plums; remove pits.  Place plums in blender or food processor and puree until smooth; set aside.
2.  Beat sugar and egg yolks in top of 2-quart double boiler until thick and lemon-colored.  Gradually stir in half-and-half.  Place top of double boiler over simmering water, stirring frequently, until mixture coats spoon; remove from heat and cool slightly.  Stir in plums and remaining ingredients. Freeze ice cream in ice cream maker according to manufacturer’s directions.  Makes about 1-1/2 quarts.
