Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook until translucent, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Add all remaining ingredients and stir well. Turn heat to a simmer and cook until thickened, stirring frequently, for 15 minutes.
The sauce is great basted on ribs, burgers, chicken, steaks, or whatever you like. Can be made 3 days ahead and can be frozen. Makes about 3 cups.
